From the Commander, David Ritch

As many of you know, there was an exodus of your Post Officers at the regular meeting of October 6, 2008.  As they departed the meeting, I assumed the ‘chair’ for the nominations of new officers.  This was accomplished and the required notice of an election of officers was read to all present as to the process of electing those stepping up to serve Pro-Tem.  The required notice was sent to all post members from a list of members provided by the National Headquarters.  At the scheduled meeting on October 20th, a new slate of officers was duly elected and installed in office.  The installation was conducted by Past Department Commander Dick Whipple.  You may review the listing of your new officers elsewhere in this bulletin.

As to the future, we ask for your support and assistance in securing a successful post operation.  With your help, we know it can be done.  Volunteers, like you, are essential!  I consider volunteers to be the ‘gold standard’ for any successful operation.  Several people have already stepped forward to help and I thank them.

Many of our regular post programs will continue and we ask your support for their success.

This is your post and a great place to gather.  Be a part of our FUTURE!

From the Ladies Auxiliary President, Jennifer Masterjohn

To my Sisters and Comrades,

Here’s to my first month of journalism, due to circumstances out of my control, it has been awhile to see an article from me.  We are going into a great new year of projects that will be discussed in our meetings.  With lots of new changes happening within our Post, please come on down and check it out!  It is a fantastic breath of fresh air.

Please be patient with getting your new membership cards for the year.  We are working on it on a daily basis.  I have had several calls regarding membership and have been unable to respond due to a family emergency on my part, so I apologize in advance for the wait.

We are in desperate need of volunteers for the Sunday breakfasts and preparing food for the Sunday football games.  I cannot stress this enough and I do understand that people have things in their own personal lives that sometimes conflict with these needs.  All I ask is that you do try and lend a hand.  Our Post is worth the effort.

We have a vacancy in the office of Trustee and will have an election on Monday, December 1st at our regular meeting at 6:30pm.  Please let me know if you would be interested.  This is a necessary position and a good way to get more involved with the auxiliary.

One last thing is to remember that your annual dues of $25 are due by December 1st in order to be processed in time.  Also the $7 annual fee for our Cancer/Health insurance is also due.  Please bring your dues to the next meeting or you can mail them to:

I am looking forward to our next meeting on Monday, November 3rd at 6:30pm.  Hope you can all make it out to attend.

We love you and need you.

From the Men’s Auxiliary President, Tom Grigsby

The Men’s Auxiliary to Lake Washington VFW Post #2995 meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm.  The main purpose of the Men’s Auxiliary is to augment the post in any way we can.  We are looking forward to being involved with the Poppy Drive for Veteran’s Day.

Stop by the post and sign up for a day and time that you will be available to assist.

The Men’s Auxiliary also helps the Troop Support Group with their car washes and have assisted the Ladies Auxiliary with several of their functions.

Honor Guard

The Honor Guard has had another active year.  Our newest members are Reid June, Jeff Evans, Sue Korte and Cecilia Maerz.

November is always a busy one as Veterans Day brings programs such as the Poppy Drive, the ceremony at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue at 11am on November 11th, Madison House on the 10th, the Kirkland Eagles on the 8th as well as several school programs this year.

When we take the bus to various events, you are all welcome to ride along with us.  This will save you gasoline and parking problems.  You just have to be at the post on time. We will be taking the bus on November 11th to Sunset Hills.  Be at the post before 10am because that is when the bus will leave for Sunset Hills.  There will be a covered seating area available for the program.  Our next trip will be on Sunday, December 7th to Key Port for the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day program.  They have music and a very moving program.  You will also get to meet many Pearl Harbor survivors.

On the second Wednesday of every month we are at Tahoma National CemeteryServing Those Who Served Us.

If you know someone who might be interested in joining the Honor Guard, please contact Jim Weaver, Paul Magat or Karin Ridge for more information.  You can leave a message at the post and we will call you back.  425 883-2995

Support the Troops from John Kenny

Remember when we were children, there was always some little monster in the neighborhood.  This person would hide behind a tree and throw rocks at you as you went by, always fleeing again to hide behind a tree.  That little person has grown up and now writes anonymous letters.  If that person would stop hiding behind a screen of secrecy we could explain to him or her that this is a VFW post.  We all fought for your rights to disagree and express your opinions, however, we cannot provide you with the courage of your convictions.  You must provide this.  You’re gown up now so come out from behind the tree.  Our meetings are always open and you are cordially invited to express your opinion.  We meet every Thursday night at 7:00 pm at our post.

If this anonymous person had read our post newspaper in April this year he or she would have seen a full explanation of why we award T-shirts and caps to our volunteers and why we purchase $50 plaques for people and businesses who donate $1,000 or more.  During the four years our program has been in existence I have brought this to the floor many times.  At our September Post meeting, at my request, it was again brought to the Post floor.  Our program received a unanimous vote of confidence from all of the members present.  What we do makes good business sense.

Our members are doers not talkers.  You will see them outside stores in the cold and rain, washing cars, serving meals and packing boxes.  For 3 years in a row we have collected donations outside Safeco Field when the wind chill factor was just about at freezing. I relieved one young student so she could get a cup of hot chocolate.  She was holding flyers in one hand and a donation can in the other hand.  Her poor little fingers were almost frozen but she stayed on for 3 hours.  There is no way in the world I would ask her for $6 for the cap she was wearing.

We were just notified we were awarded a $10,000 grant by the Wal-Mart Corporation.  On behalf of the troops we serve we all owe a debt of gratitude to Kim Carlson, the manager of the Lynnwood Wal-Mart store.  Kim is the person most responsible for us receiving this grant.
